GIF: AB De Villiers Tries Bowling, Hashim Amla Keeping in South Africa vs. India

India were building a position of strength against South Africa in the first Test at Johannesburg, but a desperate day for the hosts descended into farce as South Africa put on wicket keeper AB de Villiers to bowl before tea on the third day of the match.

De Villiers was behind the stumps, but captain Graeme Smith threw him the ball as South Africa tried to get through their overs.

De Villiers is many things in the game, but he is not a bowler. Look no further than the GIF above for proof.

South Africa were partly the victims of bad luck, and partly poor judgement.

Seamer Morne Morkel turned his ankle earlier in the day, and the injury ruled him out of the contest for the time being.

He had bowled just a single over in the second innings at that point, costing nine runs. His eight overs in the first innings were also expensive and lacking in any control. That said, it showed a huge lack of faith in his abilities, and commentators were openly questioning what he must have been feeling watching de Villiers called into action.

Although India clearly have the upper hand at present, what's strangest is that the game remains in the balance, and quick wickets for the Proteas would give them every chance of turning the match around.

With Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Jacques Kallis all available as seam options, as well as the spin of Tahir and even recognised part-timer JP Duminy, they should have had the resources to cope.
