HARARE - Prominent wheel spinner Deon “DJ Smoove” Fulton’s death in a car accident yesterday morning has plunged Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry into mourning.
DJ Smoove, who was reportedly driving alone, was involved in the fatal crash near Sam Levy’s Village. The fabled DJ, who recently remixed King Shaddy’s Sister Gire, was reportedly coming from a gig when he fatally crashed his car.
Veteran producer Kuda “Begotten Sun” Musasiwa, who was a close friend of the late wheel spinner, expressed shock at the untimely death of DJ Smoove.
“After finishing work at Club Envy he was driving along Borrowdale Road on his way home; he lived in Borrowdale,” said a grieving Begotten Sun.
“The accident happened near TM. We suspect the accident happened between 3 and 4am because he was last seen on Whatsapp around 3am. I am not the official person to address this issue but this is all I know.”
DJ Smoove, who performed in Europe for over 20 years, was scheduled to play tonight at the Pariah State Cocktail Lounge for an old school party.
Social networks were abuzz with condolence messages from fellow artistes who paid reverence to the former Europe-based DJ.
DJ Smoove’s close friend and fellow DJ, Kennedy Mos Deezy Mhangwa, wrote a condolence message on his Facebook page: “This cant be true…Dj Smoove no more.Was with him last night at the new joint in Avondale and had a chat with him. This is so sad — cannot believe this. Life is too short for sure.
DJ Robbie Tee wrote on Facebook: “RIP DJ Smoove we have lost a talented person and friend.”
Fellow DJ TBass Gukuta chipped in on Facebook too, “Deon Fulton aka DJ Smoove…woke up to the horrific news that you had been in a car accident…I can’t believe you gone my brother and fellow scouser.”
Candice Mwakayleyle, a ZiFM DJ tweeted, “RIP DJ Smoove…what sad news to wake up to.”
Take5 tweeted: “The Soft Spoken Beast behind the decks has left us! Zim’s best scratch DJ. RIP Smoove.”
Energetic performer Ammara Brown also wrote condolences on her Facebook page: “We still can’t believe it.
