Mine workers pledge support to President Lungu

President Lungu has invoked Article 31 of the Constitution to give police more powers to curb the spate of sabotage to public infrastructure.

UMUZ president Wisdom Ngwira said in a statement yesterday that the sporadic cases of fire outbreaks being recorded in the country are destroying the peace and unity Zambia has enjoyed since independence.

Mr Ngwira said sabotage to public infrastructure has the potential to scare away investors who have established various enterprises in Zambia which have created jobs for the local people.

He said the union will rally behind President Lungu as he puts in place measures to safeguard people’s lives and public infrastructure.

“The rate at which we are experiencing these fire incidents in the country is alarming and as a union, we will support the efforts that are being made by his Excellency to restore order in the country,” he said.

Mr Ngwira urged President Lungu to remain strong, steadfast and focused as he executes his duties.

He also commended President Lungu for his commitment to improving infrastructure in various sectors of the economy, which has greatly helped to transform the lives of people.

And Mr Ngwira has condemned the gutting of Lusaka City Market and has called on law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits to book.

He said the market was built at a huge cost and should be preserved for the future generation.
